Biography
Cathal Garvey trained as a violinist and conductor in the Cork School of Music, University College Cork and Moscow Conservatory.
Following his studies, he taught violin and played professionally in Ireland and Germany. He then worked as an opera chorus master for most of Ireland’s major opera companies and also conducted Ireland’s leading professional and amateur orchestras, as well as several major choirs.
During his training, he studied with several conductors, particularly George Hurst and Gerhard Markson. Since moving to London in 2009 to work for two seasons as chorus master for Grange Park Opera, he has regularly conducted numerous amateur and professional orchestras.
He is currently Musical Director of Reading Symphony Orchestra and is founder and Director of the Ulysses Symphony Orchestra. He also tutors in undergraduate and post-graduate Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, and offers private conducting lessons in London.
